What is ping and internet latency?

Speed and latency measure different things
Bandwidth, often shown in Mbps, describes how much data the connection can carry over time. Latency describes how long a small piece of data takes to make a trip. A wide highway can move many cars, but a distant destination still takes time to reach.
This is why a connection can download large files quickly yet still feel delayed in an online game or interactive call.
What a ping test does
A ping test sends a small message to a server and measures the round-trip time. The result is displayed in milliseconds. One thousand milliseconds equals one second.
The result depends on the server you test. A nearby server normally responds faster than one across an ocean, so compare tests using the same destination.
What increases latency
Latency that jumps around can be as disruptive as a consistently high result. This variation is often called jitter and can make audio, video, or game movement feel uneven.

- Crowded Wi-Fi or network congestion
- Extra routing between networks
- Busy or slow remote servers
- Uploading or downloading enough data to fill the connection

Simple ways to improve responsiveness
Use Ethernet for an important stationary device, move closer to the Wi-Fi router, pause large transfers, and select a geographically closer server when the app offers that choice. Restarting failing equipment can help a temporary issue, but it does not change the physical distance to a service.
Test at different times and compare Ethernet with Wi-Fi. That reveals whether the delay is mostly inside the home network or farther along the internet path.
