How to convert cups to quarts

Divide the number of US cups by four. Twelve cups divided by four equals three quarts. Six cups equal one and one-half quarts.

How many milliliters or liters are in a quart?

NIST gives a US liquid quart as approximately 0.946 liter, commonly rounded to 950 milliliters for kitchen use. A US cup is about 236.6 milliliters, while NIST's practical kitchen chart rounds it to 240 milliliters.

Four practical 240-milliliter cups total 960 milliliters, slightly more than the rounded 950-milliliter quart. That small difference comes from rounding. For an exact conversion, use 0.946 liter per US liquid quart; for ordinary cooking, the rounded kitchen values are usually sufficient.

US liquid, US dry and Imperial quarts are different

The word quart does not always identify the same volume. A US dry quart is used for some dry commodities and is about 1.101 liters. A British Imperial quart is about 1.137 liters. Both are larger than the US liquid quart of about 0.946 liter.

Each system still defines four of its own cups per quart, but cup sizes differ between systems. Therefore, the safe rule is four cups per quart only when the cups and quart belong to the same measurement system. Check the recipe's origin or convert through milliliters when exact volume matters.

Tips for measuring accurately

Cups and quarts measure volume, not weight. There is no universal grams-per-quart value because ingredients have different densities. Use an ingredient-specific conversion or a kitchen scale when a recipe provides a weight.
